Aging Well: Using the Arts to Enrich the Lives of Those with Dementia

In this presentation, you will learn how Amazing Place, the day center for those with mild to moderate dementia, uses visual, performing, literary and culinary arts to engage and stimulate their participants. Their techniques of working with those with dementia offer lessons for all of us about the benefits of the arts as we age.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL ATTENDEES PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Check in will begin 15 minutes prior to the program beginning.  Due to video filming, late attendees will be asked to view the presentation in the Green Room.


Tracey Brown, Amazing Place Executive Director

For the last eleven years, Tracey Brown has led the unique day center for adults with mild to moderate dementia, recognizing and encouraging the inclusion of the arts throughout the curriculum for participants.




Suzy LaForge, Amazing Place Marketing Director and Art Teacher (visual arts)
For the last five years, Suzy LaForge has been teaching a painting class at Amazing Place and witnessing the incredible creativity of those with dementia and how art inspires and benefits those with dementia.




Emile Unverzagt, Amazing Place Participant Program Director (literary arts)
As Participant Program Director for the last ten years, Emile Unverzagt has incorporated all the varied arts into programming, most recently the literary arts through technology and a unique reminiscing writing program.




Susan Giles, Amazing Place Community Church Liaison
In addition to her role as Community and Church Liaison, Susan Giles has a varied past with music and the performing arts and will speak to how valuable these are for adults with dementia and how they’re incorporated into the Amazing Place day program.




Michael Lieb, Amazing Place Culinary Director (culinary arts)
Chef Michael has been implementing a brain healthy nutrition program at Amazing Place based on the nationally-recognized Memory Preservation Nutrition Program (TM). He leads culinary experiences for the participants at Amazing Place to allow them to be involved in creating brain healthy dishes.
