ABOUT THE LUNCHEON CHAIRS

Gwen Francis Hanna and Don A. Hanna

Gwen and Don Hanna are members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and longtime Houstonians with a combined family of seven children and seven grandchildren. Gwen has felt privileged to serve on several boards over the years and chaired multiple events in Houston with a focus on education and health. She was named ABC/Channel 13’s Woman of Distinction in 2000 and was elected to the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees in 1999. After raising her children, Gwen graduated from the University of St. Thomas and became Director of Corporate Business Development for Heritage Texas Properties.

Don is a graduate of Southern Methodist University. He was the Managing Director of the Southwest Office of ABN AMRO Bank, The Netherlands. He previously held executive positions within two other major banks. Don is currently retired and has been involved in many charitable organizations over the years.

Gwen and Don, like so many families, are affected by the challenges of behavioral health issues and are grateful to St. Martins for founding the HHCI as a gift to the Houston community. They believe our community is only as good as the least of us who struggle. Houstonians amaze us with their awareness and their magnanimous support.

ABOUT THE HONORARY CHAIRS

Judge Emmett served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1979 to 1987. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush nominated him as a Commissioner for the Interstate Commerce Commission. Judge Emmett is director of Harris County’s Homeland

Security and Emergency Management and Chairman of the Harris County Juvenile Board and the Conference of Urban Counties Policy Committee. Mrs. Gwen Emmett serves as Chair of Mental Health America of Greater Houston. The Emmetts have been married for 41 years and have four children and 13 grandchildren.

ABOUT THE CHRYSALIS SPEAKER

Pete EarlyPete Earley, New York Times Best-Selling Author and 2007 Pulitzer Prize Finalist

Pete Earley is a storyteller who has penned 17 books including four New York Times best-sellers, including The Hot House and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness.

After a 14-year career in journalism, including six years at The Washington Post, Pete became a full-time author with a commitment to expose the stories that entertain and surprise.

His honest reporting and compelling writing helped him garner success as one of few authors with “the power to introduce new ideas and give them currency,” according to Washingtonian magazine. When Pete’s life was turned upside down by the events recounted in his book Crazy, he joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness to advocate for strong mental health reform on the public stage. This new advocacy has taken him to 48 different states and multiple countries around the globe where he delivers speeches to rally against the troubled mental health systems and for the mentally ill.

ABOUT THE CHRYSALIS AWARDEE

Howard E. Butt, Jr.

Howard E. Butt, Jr.—business leader, spiritual reformer, bridge-builder, communicator, innovator and author—was one of America’s earliest and most consistent advocates of servant leadership at home, at work and at large. Mr. Butt was the voice of “The High Calling of Our Daily Work®,” 60-second radio spots that aired primetime on over 3,000 stations in all 50 states. Enthusiasm for the spots inspired TheHighCalling.org, which expanded on Mr. Butt’s messages into an engaging blend of faith, business and motivation.

For more than 50 years, Mr. Butt built bridges and reconciled diverse groups in the secular and religious worlds. A speaker at one of the early prayer breakfasts for President Eisenhower, Mr. Butt was appointed by President Kennedy to the first Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. He later organized the North American Congress of the Laity, whose honorary chairman was President Ford. In the 1950s, Mr. Butt teamed with Billy Graham to create Layman’s Leadership Institutes, a phenomenon that sparked a host of spiritual programs for business professionals. Ten years earlier, as a student, he was general chairman of the Baylor Youth Revival that exploded into Southern Baptist history.

Mr. Butt was an early board member of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and a founding board member of Christianity Today. From 1982 to 2015, Mr. Butt was president of The H. E. Butt Family Foundation, one of the early private foundations in Texas, established in 1933. The Foundation’s 1,900- plus-acre camp northwest of San Antonio welcomes over 22,000 persons annually for two or more nights without charging for the facilities. Mr. Butt also served as vice chairman of H-E-B, one of the nation’s largest independent supermarket chains.

As president of The H. E. Butt Family Foundation, Laity Renewal Foundation and Laity Lodge Foundation, Mr. Butt oversaw the administration of Laity Lodge, a nationally known Christian retreat center in Texas; Laity Lodge Youth Camp, private camping for children ages 7-16; Laity Lodge Family Camp, private camping designed to meet the needs of a diversity of families; The H.E. Butt Foundation Camp program, camping facilities provided free-of-charge to church, nonprofit and school groups; and H.E. Butt Howard E. Butt, Jr. Profile Page 2 Outdoor, programmed outdoor education for Texas schools primarily with a higher-than average student base qualifying for the Free and Reduced Hot Meal program.

Howard Butt was the author of Renewing America’s Soul; Renewing the Spirit, Healing the Soul; At The Edge of Hope: Christian Laity in Paradox (with Elliott Wright); The Velvet Covered Brick: Christian Leadership in an Age of Rebellion, which spurred national interest in servant leadership; and Who Can You Trust? Overcoming Betrayal and Fear. He resided in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Barbara Dan Butt. They have three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
