An Overview of Depression: Clinical vs. Situational and Treatment Options

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Depression is an illness that has wide reaching implications for cost, lost productivity and its impact on overall physical health. This talk will cover the prevalence, comorbidities, diagnosis, and treatment of depression. The societal impact and barriers to treatment will also be discussed.
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL ATTENDEES PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Check in will begin 15 minutes prior to the program beginning. Due to video filming, late attendees will be asked to view the presentation in the Green Room.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alok Madan, PhD, MPH
Dr. Alok Madan is clinical health psychologist with extensive experience in the implementation and evaluation of programs to improve the quality of care for individuals with chronic medical conditions and serious mental illness. He has lead efforts to improve the safety of inpatient psychiatric care and implemented outcomes assessment systems to evaluate and to improve the effectiveness of mental health services. He also has been involved with seminal efforts to evaluate neurostimulation technologies for the management of neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression and chronic pain. More recently, he has lead efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated psychiatric treatment for individuals with severe neuropsychiatric illness as well as to identify biomarkers of illness and response to treatment. In January 2018, he was recruited to Houston Methodist Hospital as Vice Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry with the opportunity to expand inpatient and outpatient mental healthcare services as well as to build a research infrastructure. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology and master of public health degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has been involved in formal training, direct patient care, clinic management and research to improve neuropsychiatric care for almost 15 years.
